Abiquiú was Georgia O'Keeffe’s permanent New Mexico home from 1949.
O'Keeffe moved permanently to Abiquiú in 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz died. She restored and lived in a historic adobe house there, which became both a residence and a source of imagery. The property is now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio.
The house’s architectural details—including a distinctive black door opening onto a white wall—became subjects in several paintings. O'Keeffe’s Abiquiú surroundings also offered access to the landscapes and villages of northern New Mexico.
Abiquiú is often mixed up with Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe spent summers and which lies nearby. Ghost Ranch was an important seasonal base, while Abiquiú became her permanent home. The town is also distinct from Santa Fe, where O'Keeffe later died and where the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located.
