Ghost Ranch inspired many of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings and drawings.
Ghost Ranch is a dramatic retreat in northern New Mexico near Abiquiú, known for red cliffs, mesas, and wide desert views. O'Keeffe began visiting the area in 1934 and later maintained a house there.
The landscape became a recurring subject in her work. She painted its cliffs, hills, ranch buildings, and the nearby Cerro Pedernal, a flat-topped mountain that she described as her private mountain because she painted it so often.
Ghost Ranch is sometimes confused with Abiquiú, another important place in O'Keeffe's New Mexico life. They are separate locations, although both appear frequently in accounts of her work. O'Keeffe eventually gave her Ghost Ranch property to the Presbyterian Church, which operates the retreat and education center there.
