The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air originally aired on NBC. The American sitcom premiered on September 10, 1990, and remained an NBC series through its six-season run, ending on May 20, 1996.
The show was created by Andy Borowitz and Susan Borowitz and starred Will Smith as a fictionalized version of himself. Its premise follows a teenager from West Philadelphia who moves in with his wealthy aunt, uncle, and cousins in Bel-Air, Los Angeles. NBC developed the series as a vehicle for Smith, who was already known as the rapper Fresh Prince of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince.
NBC’s scheduling helped establish the program as a major early-1990s hit. During the 1991–92 season, it formed part of a strong Monday-night lineup, airing before Blossom. The series ultimately produced 148 episodes.
Viewers sometimes confuse the original broadcaster with later syndication or streaming outlets. Those platforms may have carried the program in different markets, but NBC was the network that first broadcast the original series in the United States.
