Which NES game introduced the Koopalings?

The story behind the answer

Super Mario Bros. 3 introduced the Koopalings in the NES era.

Released in Japan in 1988, Super Mario Bros. 3 casts Bowser’s seven children as the rulers’ antagonists across the game’s kingdoms. Each Koopaling commands an airship and guards a stolen magic wand; defeating one restores the transformed king of that world. Their distinct designs and boss battles made them major additions to the Mario cast.

The game also established several features that became series staples, including an overworld map, multiple themed kingdoms, and power-ups such as the Super Leaf, Tanooki Suit, Frog Suit and Hammer Suit. Its eight-world structure gave the adventure a larger sense of progression than earlier NES entries.

A frequent mix-up is Super Mario World, where the Koopalings also appear as bosses. That game expanded their roles but did not introduce them. In Super Mario Bros. 3, they are already presented as Bowser’s children and as the central bosses of the first seven worlds.
