What SNES compilation remade the first four 2D Super Mario games?

Super Mario All-Stars is the SNES compilation that remade the first four 2D Super Mario games.

Released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, the compilation included Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3. Nintendo rebuilt the games rather than simply placing their original NES code on a cartridge, giving them redesigned graphics, updated music, parallax effects, bug fixes, and a save feature.

The collection also settled a major regional naming problem. In Japan, The Lost Levels had been released as Super Mario Bros. 2, while the game called Super Mario Bros. 2 in North America was a different adventure based on Doki Doki Panic. All-Stars presented both versions together under their internationally familiar names.

The compilation began after Super Mario Kart, when Nintendo wanted a substantial Mario release while Yoshi’s Island was still in development. The 1994 rerelease added Super Mario World, but that expanded package is distinct from the original four-game collection. In Japan, Super Mario All-Stars was titled Super Mario Collection.
