Super Mario Maker was first released for the Wii U. Nintendo launched the course-creation game worldwide in September 2015 as part of the Super Mario series’ 30th-anniversary celebrations.
The game lets players build, test, and share side-scrolling courses using visual styles and elements from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U. Its editor was designed to make level creation accessible without requiring programming knowledge.
The Wii U version supported online course sharing and included a stylus-friendly touchscreen interface, making the GamePad central to editing. Nintendo later released a Nintendo 3DS version in December 2016, but that edition had more limited sharing features. Super Mario Maker 2 followed on Nintendo Switch in June 2019.
The main mix-up is confusing the original game with its sequel. The first Super Mario Maker belongs to the Wii U generation; the Switch title is Super Mario Maker 2, not the original release.
