The naval battle in 480 BC where the Greek fleet defeated the Persians was the Battle of Salamis.

The battle took place in the narrow straits between the island of Salamis and the coast of Attica during Xerxes I’s invasion of Greece. An allied Greek fleet, strongly influenced by the Athenian strategist Themistocles, drew the much larger Persian navy into confined waters where its numerical advantage became difficult to use.

Greek triremes attacked in formation, while Persian ships struggled to maneuver and maintain order. The victory forced Xerxes to withdraw much of his army and marked a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars. The following year, Greek forces won another decisive victory at Plataea on land.

Salamis is often confused with Thermopylae, where a small Greek force was defeated on land, or Marathon, where the Athenians defeated a Persian army in 490 BC. Plataea was also a Greek victory, but it was a land battle in 479 BC, not the naval engagement of 480 BC.
