Answer
Eratosthenes
Which ancient Greek mathematician developed a sieve for finding prime numbers? Eratosthenes developed the Sieve of Eratosthenes, an ancient method for identifying prime numbers.
Eratosthenes of Cyrene was a Greek mathematician, astronomer, geographer, and scholar who lived in the 3rd century BCE. His sieve works by listing whole numbers from 2 upward, then repeatedly marking the multiples of each confirmed prime as composite. The numbers left unmarked are prime.
For example, after keeping 2, the method eliminates 4, 6, 8, and other multiples of 2. It then keeps 3 and eliminates its multiples, continuing with later primes. The method can begin marking at a prime's square because smaller multiples have already been crossed out.
The sieve is sometimes confused with trial division, which tests individual numbers for divisibility. Eratosthenes is also famous for estimating Earth's circumference and for serving as chief librarian of the Library of Alexandria.
