Which Native American confederacy was a key ally of the British?

The Iroquois Confederacy was a key ally of the British during the French and Indian War. Also known as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy or the League of the Iroquois, it was a powerful political alliance in northeastern North America.

The confederacy originally united five nations: the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca. The Tuscarora joined in the early eighteenth century, creating the Six Nations. Their location between French Canada and the British colonies made their diplomatic and military support strategically important.

The Iroquois did not always act as a single military force, and individual nations sometimes pursued their own interests. Still, the confederacy generally aligned more closely with Britain than with France, whose Indigenous alliances included many Algonquian-speaking peoples and the Huron-Wendat.

The Iroquois were not simply subordinate auxiliaries. They negotiated, traded, gathered intelligence, and defended their own territorial interests. Their alliance was shaped by diplomacy as much as by battlefield cooperation.
