General Jeffery Amherst directed the 1760 Montreal campaign, the final major British offensive against French Canada during the French and Indian War. Rather than relying on one attack, Amherst organized a three-pronged advance. His own force moved from the Lake Ontario region, James Murray approached from Quebec, and William Haviland advanced from the south along the Richelieu River.

The British forces converged on Montreal during the summer. By then, French forces were badly outnumbered, short of supplies, and unable to expect meaningful reinforcement from France. The city surrendered on September 8, 1760, effectively ending organized French military resistance in Canada.

Amherst’s role is sometimes confused with James Wolfe’s. Wolfe captured Quebec in 1759 but died during that victory. Amherst’s campaign came the following year and targeted Montreal, the last major French stronghold in the colony. The surrender helped complete the British conquest of New France.
