Wayne Gretzky is listed as representing Canada.
Gretzky was born in Brantford, Ontario, and represented Canada throughout a major international career. He played for the Canadian national team at events including the World Junior Championship, World Championship, Canada Cup, World Cup of Hockey, and the Winter Olympics.
His international résumé included four Canada Cup tournaments and participation in the 1998 Nagano Olympics. He later helped shape Canadian Olympic hockey as an executive, including involvement with the gold-medal team at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.
A common source of confusion is Gretzky’s long association with the United States. He played NHL seasons for the Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers and married American actress Janet Jones, but those connections did not change his national-team designation. He remained one of Canada’s most recognizable sporting figures and later served as executive director of Canada’s Olympic men’s hockey team.
