Which national park was the first established in Washington State?

The story behind the answer

Mount Rainier National Park was the first national park established in Washington State.

President Benjamin Harrison signed the legislation creating Mount Rainier National Park on March 2, 1899. The park protects the glacier-covered volcano Mount Rainier and surrounding forests, meadows, rivers, and alpine environments.

Mount Rainier had already attracted explorers, climbers, scientists, and conservation advocates before its national-park designation. The park became a major example of protecting a large mountain landscape while allowing public access through trails and roads.

The mountain remains the park’s central feature, rising to 14,410 feet according to the National Park Service’s commonly cited elevation. Olympic National Park was created later, in 1938, and North Cascades National Park followed in 1968.
