What percentage of Saint John is preserved by Virgin Islands National Park?

The story behind the answer

Virgin Islands National Park preserves about 60 percent of the land area of Saint John.

The park, established in 1956, protects much of Saint John in the U.S. Virgin Islands along with more than 5,500 acres of adjacent ocean. Its landscapes include tropical forests, beaches, coral reefs, and historic sites connected with Indigenous and Danish colonial history.

The protected percentage is sometimes described differently because park boundaries cover roughly 75 percent of the island, while private inholdings reduce the actual park lands to about 60 percent. That distinction explains why different summaries may quote both figures.

Laurance Rockefeller’s Jackson Hole Preserve donated extensive Saint John lands to the National Park Service, helping create the park. In 2001, protection expanded offshore when the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument was established.
