Which National Park Service unit is the only one located south of the equator?
Answer
National Park of American Samoa
Answer
National Park of American Samoa
The National Park of American Samoa is the only National Park Service unit located south of the equator.
The park lies in the U.S. territory of American Samoa in the South Pacific. It is spread across parts of Tutuila, Ofu, and Taʻū, protecting tropical rainforest, coral reefs, fruit bats, beaches, and important Samoan cultural landscapes.
Congress established the park on October 31, 1988. Because much of the land is held communally under Samoan traditions, the National Park Service leases land from village councils rather than simply purchasing it.
American Samoa is often confused with independent Samoa, a separate country. The National Park Service unit is in American Samoa, a U.S. territory, and is the only NPS unit south of the equator.
