Which National Park Service unit commemorates the opening battle of the American Revolutionary War?

The story behind the answer

Minute Man National Historical Park commemorates the opening battle of the American Revolutionary War.

The park preserves sites in and around Lexington, Lincoln, and Concord, Massachusetts, associated with the events of April 19, 1775. British regulars marched from Boston toward Concord to seize colonial military supplies, while colonial militia and minutemen mobilized against them.

Lexington Common saw the day’s first armed action. Later, at Concord’s Old North Bridge, colonial forces confronted British troops in a clash remembered through the phrase “the shot heard round the world.” The British retreat along the Battle Road became a running series of engagements.

Minute Man National Historical Park was established in 1959. It includes the North Bridge, Lexington Battle Green through an associated partnership, historic houses, monuments, and the Battle Road Trail. It is sometimes confused with Saratoga National Historical Park, which commemorates a major 1777 American victory later in the Revolutionary War.
