Which National Park Service site was presented to the United States as a gift from France?
Answer
Statue of Liberty National Monument
Answer
Statue of Liberty National Monument
The Statue of Liberty National Monument was presented to the United States as a gift from France.
France gave the statue to commemorate the alliance between the two countries during the American Revolution and to celebrate shared ideals of liberty. The statue was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, while Gustave Eiffel helped engineer its iron framework.
The monument was dedicated in New York Harbor on October 28, 1886. Its copper figure represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, holding a torch and a tablet inscribed with the date July 4, 1776.
The National Park Service has administered the Statue of Liberty since 1933. Ellis Island, nearby in the harbor, is also part of the same national monument, although it is commonly remembered separately for its immigration history.
