Which national park is home to Mount Everest?

The story behind the answer

Which national park is home to Mount Everest? Sagarmatha National Park in Nepal includes Mount Everest.

Established in 1976, Sagarmatha National Park protects the Everest region of Nepal’s Solukhumbu District. Its name comes from Sagarmatha, the Nepali name for Everest, commonly translated as “head of the sky.” The park reaches from forested valleys and river systems to the summit of the world’s highest mountain above sea level.

Everest stands on the Nepal–China border, so the mountain is also protected from the Tibetan side by China’s Qomolangma National Nature Preserve. Climbers approaching from Nepal typically travel through the Khumbu region, passing landmarks such as Namche Bazaar and the Khumbu Icefall. The park’s landscapes support Himalayan birch, fir, rhododendron, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and the elusive snow leopard.

Sagarmatha National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Langtang and Makalu-Barun are also major Nepalese protected areas, but neither contains Mount Everest. Chitwan National Park lies much farther south in Nepal’s lowlands.
