Nepal has the world’s only national flag that is not rectangular.
The flag consists of two stacked triangular pennants with a blue border and crimson-red interiors. The upper section contains a stylized moon, while the lower section contains a stylized sun. The modern design was adopted on 16 December 1962 after Nepal introduced a new constitutional framework.
The two pennants are associated with Nepal’s historic ruling houses and are also commonly interpreted as representing the Himalayan peaks. The sun and moon express hopes that Nepal will endure as long as those celestial bodies.
Nepal’s unusual outline is defined precisely in the country’s constitution, which includes a geometric construction diagram. Before the modern version, the symbols had more detailed human facial features; these were simplified when the current flag was standardized.
