China’s international land boundaries extend for more than 22,000 kilometres, touching countries across East, Central, South, and Southeast Asia. Its neighbours are Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Vietnam.
This total places China among the countries with the greatest number of land neighbours. Russia also borders 14 countries, although counts can vary in some references depending on disputed territories and how borders are defined.
China’s border geography reflects its enormous size and varied terrain. The Himalayas form major sections of its southern frontier, while deserts and steppes dominate parts of the north and west. China also has extensive coastlines on the Bohai, Yellow, East China, and South China seas, but maritime neighbours are not included in the figure of 14.
