Australia won the inaugural Four Nations rugby league tournament in 2009.
The first Four Nations competition was held in England and France. Australia defeated England 46–16 in the final at Elland Road in Leeds on 14 November 2009.
The tournament replaced the earlier Tri-Nations format by adding England to the regular Australia and New Zealand contest. France completed the four-team field as the invited European nation.
Australia’s victory continued its success in major international rugby league competitions. The Four Nations was later replaced by the Rugby League World Cup Nines in the international calendar, while the World Cup remained the sport’s principal global championship.
