Apollo 11 carried the first humans to land on the Moon.
NASA launched Apollo 11 from Florida on July 16, 1969. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar-module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed in the Sea of Tranquility on July 20, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module Columbia.
Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon, followed by Aldrin. The astronauts collected lunar samples, deployed scientific instruments, and returned safely to Earth on July 24.
Apollo 8 was the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon, but it did not land. Apollo 10 tested the landing procedure without touching down, and Apollo 13 suffered an explosion and circled the Moon without landing. Apollo 11 therefore holds the specific first-landing achievement.
