Which NASA center built the Voyager spacecraft?
Answer
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Answer
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory built the Voyager spacecraft.
JPL designed and assembled the two flight probes, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, as well as a test and engineering spare. The laboratory also managed the mission for NASA, continuing a long tradition of building robotic spacecraft for planetary exploration.
Voyager’s design grew out of the Mariner Jupiter-Saturn project and used a three-axis-stabilized spacecraft bus, a large high-gain antenna, scientific instruments, and radioisotope thermoelectric generators. JPL’s work connected the engineering, navigation, software, and science operations needed for the probes’ long missions.
The wording can cause confusion because NASA is the agency that sponsored and operated the program. JPL is not a rival space agency: it is a NASA-managed research and development center operated by Caltech. The other choices are NASA centers involved in important missions, but they did not build Voyager.
