Mr. Tumnus is the faun who first meets Lucy in C.S. Lewis’s novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Lucy encounters Mr. Tumnus soon after entering Narnia through the wardrobe. He carries an umbrella and parcels, and he invites Lucy to tea at his cave. His initial plan is to report her to the White Witch, but he changes his mind and helps her escape instead.
The character is important because he gives Lucy her first friendly introduction to Narnia. His home, hospitality, and later punishment establish both the danger created by the White Witch and the moral choice at the center of the story.
Mr. Tumnus is a faun, a mythological creature traditionally depicted with the upper body of a human and the legs of a goat. He is not a satyr by name in Lewis’s text, and he should not be confused with Puddleglum, a marsh-wiggle from The Silver Chair.
