Sid Vicious replaced Glen Matlock as the Sex Pistols’ bassist in 1977.

Born John Simon Ritchie, Vicious joined the band in February 1977, shortly after Matlock departed. He was already associated with London’s punk scene through his involvement with the Bromley Contingent and his friendship with members of the emerging movement. His stage name was reportedly inspired by a hamster belonging to Johnny Rotten.

Vicious became one of punk’s most recognizable figures, although his limited instrumental ability meant that other musicians sometimes played bass on Sex Pistols recordings and performances. On the band’s 1977 album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, guitarist Steve Jones played most of the bass parts.

A common mix-up is assuming Vicious was the original bassist. Matlock held that role during the band’s formative period and co-wrote several songs, including “Anarchy in the U.K.” Vicious remained with the Sex Pistols until their breakup in January 1978.
