Which musician produced the Ramones’ 1976 debut studio album?

The story behind the answer

Craig Leon produced the Ramones’ 1976 debut studio album, Ramones.

Leon worked with the band on the album at Plaza Sound in New York City. The record was made quickly and contains fourteen short songs, including “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Beat on the Brat,” “Judy Is a Punk,” and “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.” Its direct production and compact arrangements became influential models for later punk and pop-punk recordings.

A common mix-up is Tom Erdelyi, better known as Tommy Ramone. He was the band’s drummer at the time and also served as a producer on later Ramones projects, but Craig Leon produced the original album. Ed Stasium is another associated producer and engineer from the band’s later catalog. The debut album initially sold modestly but became foundational to the Ramones’ reputation.
