Which musician gave a major concert in East Berlin in 1988, drawing about 300,000 people?
Answer
Bruce Springsteen
Answer
Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen gave the major 1988 East Berlin concert that drew about 300,000 people.
Springsteen performed on 19 July 1988 at the Weißensee velodrome in East Berlin. The concert was organized by the Free German Youth, East Germany’s official youth organization, and attracted an estimated audience of roughly 300,000 people. It was one of the largest rock concerts ever held in the country.
Before performing, Springsteen spoke in German and said he hoped one day all barriers would be torn down. The concert therefore acquired a strong political reputation, even though it occurred more than a year before the Wall opened.
The event is often mixed up with David Bowie’s 1987 West Berlin performances. Bowie played near the Wall, while Springsteen played inside East Berlin. Springsteen’s concert was also recorded and broadcast to a much wider East German audience.
