Which musician co-wrote “One Love/People Get Ready” with Bob Marley?

Curtis Mayfield co-wrote “One Love/People Get Ready” with Bob Marley.

The song combines Marley’s earlier composition “One Love” with elements of Mayfield’s 1965 song “People Get Ready,” originally recorded by the Impressions. The 1977 version therefore credits both songwriters and links Jamaican reggae with American soul and gospel-influenced songwriting.

Marley had recorded earlier versions of “One Love,” but the 1977 arrangement on the album Exodus expanded the song into the internationally familiar anthem. Its message of unity helped make it one of Marley’s most recognizable recordings.

Listeners sometimes credit the entire song solely to Marley because his performance made it famous worldwide. The title itself signals the collaboration: “People Get Ready” is not merely a subtitle but a reference to Mayfield’s composition.
