The track’s listed producers are Swift, Jack Antonoff, and Alwyn. Its listed songwriters are Swift and Antonoff. Alwyn’s production credit is especially notable because he was credited on Folklore collaborations under the pseudonym William Bowery.
This distinction can be confusing because Alwyn did co-write other Folklore songs with Swift, including “betty” and “exile,” using that pseudonym. His involvement with “august,” however, was as a producer rather than a credited lyricist or composer.
The production partnership reflects how Folklore was assembled remotely and collaboratively during the pandemic. Swift, Antonoff, Alwyn, and other contributors helped create the album’s intimate, layered sound without relying on a conventional studio rollout.
