Taylor Swift’s “august” is described as Folklore’s closest thing to a pop song.
Producer and collaborator Aaron Dessner characterized the track as more pop-oriented than much of the album, while still highlighting its shimmering summer haze. The song combines dream pop, guitar pop, and soft rock, creating a fuller and more expansive arrangement than many of Folklore’s quieter songs.
Its production includes 1990s-influenced guitars, strings, keyboards, minimal synthesizers, and heavy vocal reverb. The ending builds toward a large orchestral climax, which gives the song a cinematic quality.
Calling it Folklore’s closest pop song does not make it a conventional mainstream pop single. “august” remains an atmospheric album track whose genre descriptions overlap across pop, rock, and dream-pop traditions.
