Which museum in Santa Fe became the first museum dedicated to Georgia O'Keeffe's art?
Answer
Georgia O'Keeffe Museum
Answer
Georgia O'Keeffe Museum
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe became the first museum dedicated to her art.
The museum opened in 1997, eleven years after O'Keeffe's death. It was established to preserve, study, and present her work and her life in relation to the American Southwest. The institution holds a major collection of her paintings, drawings, and other materials.
O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in the late 1940s and died in Santa Fe in 1986. The museum's location therefore connects directly with the region that shaped much of her later career.
The institution is not the same as the New Mexico Museum of Art or the nearby Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Research Center. Those organizations have different collections and functions. The museum's collection and exhibitions cover more than her famous flowers, including early abstractions, cityscapes, bones, churches, and Southwestern landscapes.
