Which museum in Paris held the 2020 Chanel exhibition 'Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto'?
Answer
Palais Galliera
Answer
Palais Galliera
The 2020 Paris exhibition Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto was held at the Palais Galliera, the City of Paris’s fashion museum.
The exhibition opened on 1 October 2020 after the museum reopened following an expansion and ran until 14 March 2021. It was the first major Paris retrospective devoted to Gabrielle Chanel’s work, tracing her career from the 1910s through her final years.
Rather than presenting only famous garments, the exhibition explored the design codes associated with Chanel, including jersey clothing, tweed suits, little black dresses, costume jewellery, handbags, and perfume. Its displays combined pieces from the Palais Galliera and Chanel’s heritage collections with loans from international museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
A common mix-up is the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, which also holds important fashion exhibitions and contributed loans to the show. The Palais Galliera is distinct: it is specifically dedicated to fashion and is housed in a nineteenth-century palace near the Trocadéro in Paris. The exhibition’s later London presentation at the Victoria and Albert Museum was based on the Paris version but was not the original venue.
