What is the name of Coco Chanel's villa on the French Riviera?
Answer
La Pausa
Answer
La Pausa
The name of Coco Chanel’s villa on the French Riviera was La Pausa.
Chanel built the villa at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, above the Mediterranean coast, in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Its design, by architect Robert Streitz, echoed the convent-orphanage at Aubazine where Chanel spent part of her childhood. A cloister-like courtyard and stone staircase helped give the house a deeply personal character.
La Pausa became a retreat for Chanel and a gathering place for artists, writers and friends. Guests associated with it included Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Igor Stravinsky and Winston Churchill. Churchill later spent substantial time there while staying with the villa’s subsequent owners, Emery and Wendy Reves.
A common mix-up is confusing La Pausa with Chanel’s Paris headquarters at 31 Rue Cambon. La Pausa was a private Riviera residence, and Chanel later inspired a perfume named 28 La Pausa.
