Which museum holds the lantern Guy Fawkes carried when arrested? The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford holds Guy Fawkes’s lantern.
Fawkes was arrested during a second search of the undercroft beneath the House of Lords late on 4 November 1605. He gave the name John Johnson and was carrying a lantern. The object is now associated with the moment authorities discovered him guarding the gunpowder intended for the planned destruction of Parliament.
The search party also found slow matches and touchwood on Fawkes, along with 36 barrels of gunpowder concealed beneath firewood and coal. He was taken to King James I early on 5 November. The failed conspiracy became the reason Britain commemorates 5 November as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night.
The lantern is sometimes confused with the plot’s explosives or with objects held by national museums in London. Its specific museum home is Oxford’s Ashmolean, one of the world’s oldest public museums. The lantern’s survival gives a tangible connection to the arrest at the centre of the Gunpowder Plot story.
