Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi is often called the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent.
The tomb was commissioned by Hamida Banu Begum for her husband, the Mughal emperor Humayun, and was completed in 1572. Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and his son Sayyid Muhammad are associated with its design.
Its planned charbagh, or four-part garden, organizes water channels and pathways around the central mausoleum. The building combines a high platform, red sandstone, white marble, a double dome, and formal geometric planning, establishing an influential Mughal visual language.
The monument predates the Taj Mahal by several decades and helped shape later Mughal tomb design. It also became a burial complex for members of the Mughal dynasty, with numerous later graves within the surrounding enclosure.
