Road Rules was the MTV reality series that followed contestants competing in outdoor and adventure challenges around the world.
The series premiered in 1995 and placed a small group of young adults in a recreational vehicle or similar mobile setting. Participants traveled through different locations while completing missions, often involving physical endurance, teamwork, navigation, or unusual local activities. The show’s travel structure distinguished it from the house-based format of The Real World.
Road Rules later became especially important because its cast members crossed over into MTV’s competition franchise The Challenge. The Challenge brought together alumni from Road Rules and The Real World before expanding to contestants from additional reality programs.
A frequent mix-up is treating The Challenge as the original travel show. The Challenge is the later competition series, whereas Road Rules supplied the road-trip format and many of the early contestants. The Real World was also foundational to MTV reality television, but it followed roommates living together rather than a team completing missions across multiple destinations.
