Diary was the MTV documentary series that examined musicians’ private lives through interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.
MTV’s Diary premiered in 2000 and used a first-person documentary style to follow entertainers away from the stage. Episodes typically focused on a single subject, combining direct commentary with footage of work, travel, family life, rehearsals, and public appearances.
The program became closely associated with the phrase “You think you know, but you have no idea,” which framed each episode as a deeper look beyond a performer’s public image. Subjects included musicians and other prominent entertainers.
Diary is sometimes confused with MTV Cribs, but the programs had different formats. Cribs toured celebrity homes, while Diary centered on a personal narrative about a subject’s life and career. The series helped MTV broaden its documentary storytelling during the reality-television boom.
