MTV’s animated series centered on the acrobatic assassin Aeon Flux is Aeon Flux.
The series was created by animator Peter Chung and began as a series of experimental shorts on MTV’s Liquid Television in 1991. Its surreal science-fiction setting featured the opposing nations of Monica and Bregna, with Aeon repeatedly crossing paths with Bregnan leader Trevor Goodchild.
Aeon Flux became a standalone MTV series in 1995, expanding the world and characters introduced in the shorts. The episodes were known for sparse dialogue, unusual visual design, espionage themes, and highly stylized action rather than conventional cartoon comedy.
The title is sometimes written with the ligature “Æ,” as “Æon Flux,” in reference to the original stylized spelling. It is distinct from The Maxx and Daria, other animated programs associated with MTV’s 1990s lineup. A live-action film adaptation, starring Charlize Theron, was released in 2005.
