Which mountain region is named as the Ark’s resting place in Genesis?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. The wording is plural, referring to a mountainous region rather than explicitly naming the modern peak Mount Ararat.

Ararat is associated with the ancient kingdom of Urartu, a region traditionally linked with areas around eastern Anatolia and the South Caucasus. The biblical phrase therefore does not provide a precise archaeological location for the vessel.

Later traditions and searches have often focused on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey. That mountain is a prominent volcanic peak and became especially influential in popular ideas about where the ark might be found.

The distinction matters because Genesis says “mountains of Ararat,” not “Mount Ararat.” Archaeological expeditions and alleged discoveries have not produced generally accepted evidence that the biblical ark survives there.
