Which mountain is the highest volcano on Earth, rising to 6,893 metres in the Andes?

The story behind the answer

Ojos del Salado is the highest volcano on Earth, rising to 6,893 metres in the Andes.

The stratovolcano lies on the Argentina–Chile border, within the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes. Its summit is also the highest point in Chile and the second-highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere, after Aconcagua.

The name means “Eyes of the Salty One,” referring to nearby salt flats and saline lagoons. Although Ojos del Salado is classed as active, its eruptions are rare; the latest known activity occurred in the Holocene.

It is often confused with Aconcagua because both are near the Argentina–Chile border, but Aconcagua is higher and is not generally classified as a volcano.
