Which mountain is the highest summit of the Karakoram’s Gasherbrum massif, rising to 8,080 metres?

The story behind the answer

Gasherbrum I is the highest summit of the Gasherbrum massif, rising to 8,080 metres in the Karakoram.

It is also known as Hidden Peak, a name inspired by the mountain’s relatively concealed position in the remote Karakoram. The massif lies in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, near the border with China, in a region containing several of the world’s highest mountains.

An American expedition made the first ascent on 5 July 1958. The summit team was led by Andrew Kauffman and Pete Schoening, who climbed a demanding route on the mountain’s northwest side.

Gasherbrum I is sometimes confused with Gasherbrum II, another 8,000-metre peak in the same massif. Gasherbrum II is lower, at 8,035 metres, and has a different climbing history and summit route.
