Which mountain is the highest point on the island of New Guinea, rising to about 4,884 metres?

The story behind the answer

Puncak Jaya is the highest point on the island of New Guinea, rising to about 4,884 metres.

It is located in Indonesia’s Central Papua province and is also known as Carstensz Pyramid, a name associated with Dutch explorer Jan Carstenszoon, who reported seeing glaciers in the region in the seventeenth century. “Puncak Jaya” means “Glorious Peak.”

The mountain is part of the Sudirman Range and is the highest summit between the Himalayas and the Andes. Its position makes it one of the traditional Seven Summits lists, although different lists use different criteria for Australia and Oceania.

Puncak Jaya is sometimes confused with Mount Wilhelm, the highest mountain in Papua New Guinea. Mount Wilhelm is on the eastern side of New Guinea, whereas Puncak Jaya is on the Indonesian-controlled western half of the island.
