Which mountain is the highest point in Iran?

The story behind the answer

Mount Damavand is the highest point in Iran.

Damavand is a potentially active stratovolcano in the Alborz mountain range, south of the Caspian Sea. Its summit reaches 5,609 metres, making it the highest mountain in Iran and the highest volcano in Asia according to widely cited geographic references.

The mountain has a major place in Persian mythology and literature. It is especially associated with the epic Shahnameh, in which the hero Fereydun imprisons the tyrant Zahhak on Damavand. The peak is also a prominent national symbol.

Mount Damavand is sometimes confused with Mount Sabalan, another famous Iranian volcano, or Alam-Kuh, the country’s second-highest peak. Unlike those mountains, Damavand is immediately recognizable for its isolated cone rising above the Alborz landscape. Its summit is often snow-covered, although volcanic features such as fumaroles remain visible.
