What is Jordan's national flower?

The story behind the answer

Jordan's national flower is the black iris. The flower is the national symbol of Jordan and is especially associated with the country's dry highland landscapes.

The black iris, Iris nigricans, is a perennial species with very dark purple flowers that can appear almost black. It is native to Jordan and also occurs in parts of the wider Levant.

The species grows in rocky and semi-arid habitats, including areas around the Jordanian capital, Amman. Its flowering period is generally in spring, when seasonal rains support the growth of many desert and steppe plants.

The black iris is sometimes confused with the desert rose, a mineral formation found in arid regions, or with other purple iris species. Jordan's national flower is a specific iris species, not a general reference to all dark-coloured flowers.
