Which mountain is the highest peak in the United Kingdom?

The story behind the answer

Ben Nevis is the highest peak in the United Kingdom.

Ben Nevis reaches 1,345 metres above sea level near Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. Its name comes from the Gaelic Beinn Nibheis, commonly translated as “mountain with its head in the clouds.” The mountain is the highest point in Scotland and in the entire United Kingdom.

Ben Nevis is the eroded remains of a huge Devonian volcano. The summit area contains the ruins of an observatory that operated from 1883 to 1904 and helped collect valuable high-altitude weather observations. The mountain’s northern face is also known for steep cliffs and winter climbing routes.

Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England, while Snowdon—officially also called Yr Wyddfa—is the highest in Wales. Neither is higher than Ben Nevis.
