Which mountain is the highest peak in the Southern Alps of New Zealand’s South Island?

The story behind the answer

Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest peak in the Southern Alps of New Zealand’s South Island.

The mountain rises to 3,724 metres and lies within Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. It is the highest point in New Zealand and forms part of a heavily glaciated alpine landscape.

The official name combines Aoraki, a Māori name, with Mount Cook, the English name honoring Captain James Cook. The dual name reflects New Zealand’s recognition of both Māori and European heritage.

The first successful ascent was completed in 1894 by New Zealand climbers Tom Fyfe, George Graham and Jack Clarke. The mountain is often confused with Mount Tasman, the country’s second-highest peak.
