Which mountain is the highest peak in the European part of Russia?

The story behind the answer

Mount Elbrus is the highest peak in the European part of Russia.

Elbrus is a dormant double-cone volcano in the Caucasus Mountains, near Russia’s border with Georgia. Its western summit reaches 5,642 metres (18,510 feet), while the eastern summit is 5,621 metres high. Under the commonly used Europe–Asia boundary through the Caucasus, this makes Elbrus Europe’s highest mountain.

The first recorded ascent of the eastern summit took place in 1829, led by the Russian army expedition of General Georgy Emmanuel. The western summit was first reached in 1874 by a British expedition that included the climber Florence Crauford Grove.

Elbrus is part of the Seven Summits list, but the Europe–Asia boundary is a geographic convention rather than an uncontested natural line. Some alternative boundary schemes place parts of the Caucasus in Asia, which is why rankings involving Elbrus can vary between sources.
