Sněžka is the highest peak in the Czech Republic.
The mountain reaches 1,603 metres and lies in the Krkonoše, or Giant Mountains, on the Czech–Polish border. Its name translates roughly as “Snowy,” reflecting the severe winter conditions that can persist long after snow has disappeared from lower elevations.
Sněžka’s summit is rounded rather than sharply alpine. The mountain’s exposed position creates strong winds and a colder climate than its modest elevation might suggest. A mountain hut, a chapel dedicated to Saint Lawrence and a Czech post office have all been associated with the summit area, though facilities have changed over time.
The border runs across the summit, so Sněžka is also the highest point of Poland, where it is called Śnieżka. A cable car from Pec pod Sněžkou provides access to the upper mountain, while hiking trails approach from both countries. The peak lies within protected national-park landscapes on either side of the border.
