Which mountain is the highest peak in the Carpathian Mountains?
Answer
Gerlachovský štít
Answer
Gerlachovský štít
Gerlachovský štít is the highest peak in the Carpathian Mountains.
The summit rises to 2,655 metres (8,711 feet) in Slovakia’s High Tatras. It is also the highest mountain in Slovakia and the highest point in the entire Carpathian mountain system, which stretches across several countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
The mountain’s granite summit rises above a dramatic cirque called the Gerlachovský kotlina. Because the route includes exposed scrambling and climbing terrain, visitors generally need a qualified mountain guide rather than simply following an ordinary hiking trail.
Its name has changed with political borders and historical usage. Earlier names included Gerlachfalvi-csúcs and Franz-Josef-Spitze. The present Slovak name is now standard. Gerlachovský štít is sometimes confused with Lomnický štít, another famous High Tatras peak, but Lomnický štít is lower.
