Grossglockner is the highest peak in the Austrian Alps, reaching 3,798 metres in the Hohe Tauern range.
The mountain stands on the boundary between the Austrian states of Carinthia and Tyrol, within Hohe Tauern National Park. Its summit is part of a sharp double-peaked formation, with the Kleinglockner as the lower neighboring summit. The Pasterze glacier extends below the mountain and is Austria’s largest glacier, although it has significantly receded.
The first recorded ascent of Grossglockner took place in 1800 during an expedition organized by the archbishop of Salzburg. Modern climbers usually approach through the high mountain settlements and huts of the Hohe Tauern. The summit route involves glacier travel and exposed alpine terrain.
The spelling varies in English sources, but “Grossglockner” is the standard English Wikipedia title and the mountain’s commonly used name. It should not be confused with Wildspitze, the second-highest mountain in Austria, in the Ötztal Alps.
