Which mountain is the highest peak in the Alps’ neighbouring country, Slovenia?

The story behind the answer

Triglav is the highest peak in Slovenia.

The mountain reaches 2,864 metres (9,396 feet) in the Julian Alps and is the central symbol of Slovenian national identity. Its distinctive profile appears on Slovenia’s coat of arms, flag and national imagery.

Triglav means “three-headed” or “three-peaked,” referring to the mountain’s characteristic summit shape. It stands within Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park, which protects alpine valleys, forests, lakes and limestone landscapes.

The first recorded ascent was made in 1778 by Luka Korošec, Matevž Kos, Štefan Rožič and Lovrenc Willomitzer, led by naturalist Balthasar Hacquet’s project. A popular tradition says Slovenes should climb Triglav at least once in their lives, especially around major national celebrations.
